A total of 120 Ayrshire and Arran residents have died as a result of contracting coronavirus.

The figures released today by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) takes into account COVID-19 deaths up to Sunday, April 19.

The news means that 53 patients in the region have died in a week.

As of Sunday there have been a total of 1616 deaths registered in Scotland where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The new figures also mean Ayrshire still has the fourth-highest death toll in the country.

Greater Glasgow and Clyde tops the figures with 513 deaths, while Lothian is second (256) and Lanarkshire third (228).

Most deaths occur in hospitals (56 per cent) while a third of deaths happen in care homes (33 per cent).

One in 10 deaths occur at home or non-institutional settings (10 per cent).

Figures released by the Scottish Government yesterday showed that there are 623 confirmed coronavirus cases in Ayrshire.
