Coronavirus Scotland: Three more people die as 176 new cases recorded

Coronavirus has claimed the lives of three more people in Scotland.

The grim news was announced by the Scottish Government this afternoon as part of their daily Covid-19 update.

It is the highest figure since June. The country's confirmed death now stands at 2,499 although 4,228 deaths have been registered in Scotland where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

A total of 176 new cases of the disease have been reported in the last 24 hours - including eight in Ayrshire.

Ayrshire has now had 1.416 confirmed cases since the outbreak.

National clinical director Jason Leitch said the Scottish Government and officials are worried about the spike in numbers and new deaths.

Symptoms of coronavirus...

The symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a cough
  • a high temperature
  • shortness of breath
  • a loss of taste and smell

But these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness.

The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

How to avoid catching or spreading coronavirus...

  • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  • always wash your hands when you get home or into work

  • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

  • put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards

  • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell

  • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

If you think you may have the coronavirus, do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111 if you need to speak to someone.
