Third coronavirus death in Scotland as confirmed cases rise to 227

A third person has died from coronavirus in Scotland, the Scottish Government confirmed.

Nicola Sturgeon says there are now 227 confirmed cases of the infection in the country.

The third person follows on from a patient in Greater Glasgow and Clyde dying on Tuesday, and the first person to pass away on Friday in Lothian.

Speaking today at a press conference, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "It is with sadness this afternoon that I have to confirm the death of one more patient."

She said her thoughts were with the families of those who have died.

It means there have been 32 positive cases confirmed overnight since yesterday.

The First Minister also confirmed school in Scotland are expected to close from Friday and may not open until 'after the summer'.

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said: "We expect the number of cases to rise and Scotland is well-prepared for a significant outbreak of coronavirus.

"There is currently no treatment or vaccine so early detection measures will continue to be vital in helping to prevent the spread of the virus."
