Coronavirus Scotland: Pubs and bars warned to review security as robbers target businesses

Pub and restaurant owners across Ayrshire have been urged to empty their premises to guard against looters.

It follows two Ayr town centre businesses being targeted by robbers as the nation entered lockdown this week.

Smiths Bar/Restaurant and the Waterfront were both broken into as traders locked their doors for the forseeable future.

Now police have issued a plea to business owners in the commercial sector to clean out their properties.

A police spokesman said: "Owners/operators of commercial premises are asked to review security arrangements whilst many premises are closed, and ensure that no money is left on site and stock is removed where possible.

"Anyone with information on crime in their community is encouraged to contact Police Scotland by calling the national non-emergency number 101 (in an emergency always dial 999).

"Information can also be passed via the independent charity CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111."
