Unknown number of residents die at Aberdeenshire care home hit by Covid-19

A number of residents at an Aberdeenshire care home have died following an outbreak of coronavirus.

Residents at the Kirkburn Court facility in Peterhead tested positive for Covid-19 according to the company’s operator Barchester.

The home, which looks after the elderly and those living with dementia, supports a maximum of 64 people.

However, it is not known at this stage how many people at the care home have passed away as a result of the deadly virus.

Kirkburn Court is the latest care home facility in Scotland to have been severely impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.

A spokesperson for the home's operator Barchester said: “We are reporting all Covid-19 information to the relevant authorities, and as you can imagine it is a constantly changing picture.

"However, we can confirm that we have had individuals confirmed with Covid-19 at the home, and tragically some of those have sadly passed away.

“Every one of these deaths is a tragedy for all of us, and we send our heartfelt condolences to our residents, their families and our staff that have suffered.

"The home is in regular contact with Health Protection Scotland and the local authority.”

So far since the outbreak of coronavirus there have been 1,438 people who have died from Covid-19 in care homes across the country.

Figures released by the National Records of Scotland revealed that up until May 10 a total of 93 people had passed away in care homes in the Grampian region.

The news of the deaths in Peterhead come after a tenth resident died at the Home Farm care home on the isle of Skye.

Thirty residents and 29 staff have now tested positive for coronavirus at the home in Portree.

The latest resident lost their life after battling with the deadly  virus  on Friday.

NHS Highland has stepped in to play a greater role in running the home after the Care Inspectorate raised concerns.

A spokesman for HC-One, the home's operator, said: "Our thoughts and sympathies are with all families who have lost a loved one from coronavirus and we are doing our utmost to support them during this difficult time."
