Coronavirus Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon to provide live update from Edinburgh today

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is to provide a live update from Edinburgh early this afternoon.

She will provide an update on the latest coronavirus figures, as well as addressing any changes to be made to lockdown restrictions.

It comes after 43 new cases of the virus in Scotland were recorded in Scotland, with no new deaths reported.

Nicola Sturgeon will be joined by health secretary Jeane Freeman and interim chief medical officer Dr Gregor Smith.

Since the start of the pandemic, 18,998 people have tested positive for COVID-19.

As of yesterday, 261 people were in hospital with confirmed or suspected COVID-19, with three people in intensive care. No change on the previous day.

Edinburgh Live looked at exactly where the new cases were, with NHS Grampian seeing a large increase .

National NHS clinical director Prof Jason Leitch has warned tougher measures could be taken against schools in Grampian if control of community coronavirus transmission is lost.

He told the BBC this morning that parents should be "cautious" but not "overly worried" about the return of pupils to class.

The First Minister will likely face questions about the SQA results for school pupils, as well as the return to class planned for this week.

A protest is taking place outside the Scottish Parliament by Edinburgh pupils over the results, which they say unfairly penalised them.

The 'students against classism' protest hopes to make the SQA re-evaluate results in a way that isn't "based on a classist marking scheme."
