Coronavirus Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon reports 175 new virus cases, with 24 in Lothian area

175 new cases of coronavirus were identified in the last 24 hours, Nicola Sturgeon said today as warned other parts of Scotland could see tougher lockdown restrictions imposed.

24 of the new cases were in the NHS Lothian area, whilst 80 were identified in Glasgow and 39 were in Lanarkshire.

The new cases represented 2.7 per cent of those who were newly tested on Thursday.

She said the average number of new cases in Scotland had been trebling in recent weeks, a situation the First Minister said was not sustainable if we want to ensure schools and businesses remain open.

No new deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, meaning the death toll under that measure remains unchanged.

However one more person was admitted to intensive care overnight, meaning eight people across Scotland are receiving treatment in ICU.

A total of 22,214 people have tested positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic in late March.

Nicola Sturgeon said the situation in Lanarkshire was posing a particular concern, and officials will discuss it today and whether more restrictions might be needed in the area similar to those in place in Glasgow.
