Coronavirus Scotland: New virus cases spike as Nicola Sturgeon confirms no new deaths for 13 days

New cases of coronavirus identified in Scotland have reached double figures for the first time in over a week.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that in the last 24 hours there had been 22 new cases confirmed through a test.

It means 18,580 people have tested positive for the virus in Scotland.

This represented 0.7% of those tested overall.

However, Sturgeon also confirmed that there had been no further virus deaths for a 13th consecutive day.

She also said four fewer people were in hospital with the virus, whilst two people remain in intensive care.

A total of 2,491 patients have died in Scotland after testing positive for coronavirus, no change on Tuesday’s figure.

The figures are lower than the 4,201 deaths given earlier by the National Records of Scotland as they do not include suspected and probable coronavirus infections.

The First Minister indicated that 14 of the new cases identified were believed to be in Glasgow, where a possible cluster was being investigated.
