Coronavirus Scotland: New figures show dramatic drop in Ayrshire Covid-19 death rate

The Covid-19 death rate in Ayrshire is continuing to fall, new figures show.

A total of 282 Ayrshire and Arran deaths have been linked to coronavirus since the pandemic began.

The National Records of Scotland revealed today in its weekly report that six people died between Monday, June 1 and Sunday, June 7 – down from 14 the previous week.

This is the smallest rise in reported deaths so far and it means the rate of Covid-19-related deaths has not increased since the week ending Sunday, April 19, when 53 people died.

Across Ayrshire, 126 deaths have taken place in care homes, while hospital deaths account for 136.

In South Ayrshire 106 people have died as a result of contracting Covid-19, an increase of just one on last week's update. In East Ayrshire 72 have died and in North Ayrshire that number is 104.

In South Ayrshire, hospital deaths accounted for 52 fatalities, while 49 occurred in care homes.

The new figures also mean Ayrshire has the fifth-highest death toll in the country.

Greater Glasgow and Clyde tops the figures with 1,283 deaths, while Lothian is second (688) and Lanarkshire third (552).
