Coronavirus Scotland: National death toll rises to 218 as positive cases of COVID-19 in Ayrshire hit 254

The number of people who have died after contracting the coronavirus in Scotland has risen to 218, it has been announced this afternoon.

That is an increase of 46 from yesterday.

The figures have been published as part of the Scottish Government's daily update.

In the Ayrshire and Arran region another 14 people have tested positive for coronavirus during the last 24 hours.

The confirmation means that the total number of confirmed people with the deadly virus in the region has risen to 254.

A total of 3,345 people have now tested positive in Scotland - a daily rise of 344.

The UK death toll has risen to 4,313 after a further 708 died in the last 24 hours.

There is a risk of people who have had the virus - and are likely to have immunity - returning to normal life and being followed by others who have not (PA)

It comes as more than 50,000 people across Scotland have signed up to offer help during the coronavirus outbreak.

So far 20,798 tests have been conducted in Scotland with 17,453 of them coming back as negative.
