Coronavirus Scotland latest: Tests reveal 245 new cases with more lockdown rules due 'shortly'

245 new cases of coronavirus were identified in Scotland on Sunday, the latest Scottish Government data has shown.

This represent 5.4 per cent of all those who were newly tested - over the five per cent target set by the World Health Organization.

53 of the cases identified were in the NHS Lothian area, where the figure increased from 3,861 to 3,914.

No new deaths were reported after three were reported on Saturday.

Health secretary Jeane Freeman has said a decision is due shortly on whether tougher restrictions will be reimposed to control the spread of the virus.

Scientists have warned that left unchecked, the UK could be seeing as many as 100,000 new infections a day by mid-October.

Freeman said on Sunday: "We're not seeing community transmission at this point, but are seeing large clusters and outbreaks of cases in some parts of Scotland.

"So we're working this weekend with scientific and clinical advisers to understand what might be the additional measures that we can put in place."

She added that Nicola Sturgeon had hoped to have a Cobra meeting with the four nations this weekend to discuss measures "to see if we could reach a shared view", but that the Prime Minister was still considering the request.

When asked when the decision on lockdown measures may be made, Ms Freeman replied: "We certainly will have an announcement very shortly. Not necessarily today, but definitely by the early part of next week."

Ms Freeman also said she did not believe Scotland would move to the large fine route that England had taken.

Boris Johnson announced that people who break isolation rules in England could face fines of up to £10,000.

In Scotland, police have the ability to issue fixed penalty notices of £30, rising to £60, for those who break restrictions.
