Coronavirus Scotland latest: Further 56 deaths announced as new cases climb by 1,357

Deaths from coronavirus in Scotland have increased by 56 according to the latest Scottish Government Covid-19 update.

It means there has now been 3,244 deaths from the virus amongst people who tested positive for the virus since the start of the health crisis.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney, who led the briefing in place of Nicola Sturgeon, also confirmed a further 1,357 cases.

163 of these new cases were in the NHS Lothian area, he said, whilst the majority (433) were in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

There are 1,228 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, a rise of 21 in 24 hours.

Of these patients, 96 are in intensive care, down by two.

Speaking at the Scottish Government's coronavirus briefing, the Deputy First Minister said the daily test positivity rate is 5.7 per cent, down from 6.1 per cent on Thursday.

But Nicola Sturgeon warned yesterday that progress nationally was potentially masking regional concerns in areas such as Fife where the virus spread is increasing.

She said recent statistics "mask some very significant regional variations", including stabilisation at a "stubbornly high level" in the central belt.

The First Minister said the tough measures in place are having an effect and highlighted the R number, which measures how many people on average are infected by a single positive case, is "hovering around one and may actually be slightly below one".
