Coronavirus Scotland: Jason Leitch warns Scotland heading for 'digital Christmas'

Scotland's national clinical director Jason Leitch has issued a stark warning about Christmas this year, telling the public "people should get their digital Christmases ready."

Speaking this morning on BBC's Good Morning Scotland, Mr Leitch said although it was "too early to say" what kind of impact coronavirus would have on the festive season, he did state that "Christmas is not going to be normal".

Leitch said: “I’m hopeful costs now will get us a more family Christmas but Christmas is not going to be normal. There is absolutely no question about that.

"We are not going to be in large family groupings with multiple families coming round. That is fiction for this year.

"But I’m hopefully that if we can get the numbers down to a certain level we may have some form of normality. But people should get their digital Christmases ready."

Mr Leitch also said this weekend advisors will be working out the finer details of the tiered system, which is expected to be published tomorrow.

He could not confirm which local authority would enter into the highest tier, tier four, but said that "you have to have the option of a fuller, more unfortunate lockdown."

He also said that travel restrictions would be an option, and mentioned that even in tier four, there would be a measure to keep schools ''as open as possible".

Rising cases in Lanarkshire was a pressing issue in the discussion.

Yesterday, 605 cases were reported in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 520 in Lanarkshire, 250 in Lothian and 105 in Ayrshire and Arran.

There were 28 deaths recorded.
