Coronavirus Scotland: 'Hundreds have contracted Covid in NHS Lothian hospitals'

Hundreds of patients are believed to have contracted coronavirus while receiving hospital treatment at an NHS Lothian hospital, data has revealed.

Data compiled by the National Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infection (ARHAI) Scotland, who are responsible for tracking hospital acquired infections, revealed that there have been 236 'definite' or 'probable' Covid cases contracted from an NHS Lothian hospital during the pandemic.

It is also believed that around 2,133 Scots in total have more than likely caught the virus while in hospital over the course of the pandemic, reports the Herald.

The paper reports how as of 8 November 2020, Scotland had registered 75,173 cases of coronavirus and 1,571 of these cases came from people who had tested positive 15 or more days after having been in a hospital.

Another 562 cases of coronavirus are also believed to be 'probable' Scots hospital cases because they came from people who had tested positive eight to 14 days after being in a hospital.

There were also 496 cases of coronavirus which came from hospital patients who tested positive three to seven days after being admitted to a hospital, making it unclear if they had caught it previously or while in the hospital setting.

A whopping 4,899 Scots also tested positive within one to two days of being admitted to hospital, making it likely they had already contracted it in the community.

According to the figures from ARHAI Scotland, NHS Lothian had the second highest number of 'definite' cases of people who caught coronavirus in hospital at 236, coming second to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who had 911.

Dumfries and Galloway, Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles were among the health boards who recorded 0 definite cases caught in hospitals.
