Coronavirus Scotland: Home Bargains set aside £30m to help staff during pandemic

Home Bargains has set aside £30 million for staff during the coronavirus outbreak.

The discount store giant will maintain salaries for workers who need to self-isolate for up to two weeks or longer.

Those who don't need to self-isolate will be paid two weeks' extra salary.

A statement from Home Bargains bosses was released on March 18.

Its message to staff read: "Thank you for your amazing work during this unprecedented time.

“We want you to feel secure during this turbulent period, so we have created a £30 million Coronavirus Fund to financially support you during the outbreak.

“This will include paying staff that need to self-isolate for up to two weeks by maintaining their pay during this period, and to Team Members in high risk groups that need to isolate for longer periods.

“If staff do not need to self-isolate between now and December they will be paid two weeks’ extra salary, so they do not miss out."

Home Bargains chiefs also announced that a cap will be placed on some items, limiting the number of items shoppers can buy.

The first hour of opening will be for vulnerable customers only.

A statement made to customers read: “Our dedicated staff are working around the clock to keep all of our stores open so we can continue to serve out communities.

“We have a robust supply chain in place and will continue to support the country whatever it takes.

“To ensure all customers get the products they need, we’re limiting the maximum number you can buy of some items, as we would like to prioritise the first hour of opening for vulnerable customers - please could non-vulnerable customers not shop during this first hour of opening each day.

“Thank you everyone for all your support and patience.

“We will get through this together.”
