Coronavirus Scotland: Highest number of daily new cases rise in a month

Scotland has recorded its highest number of daily new coronavirus cases in a month.

Twenty-three further positive tests were announced on Sunday – the biggest rise since 26 new cases were confirmed on Sunday, June 21 – as authorities get to grips with an outbreak in Lanarkshire.

A cluster of cases has been identified, linked to a COVID-19 contact-tracing centre in Motherwell.

The Scottish Government published figures yesterday as part of its daily update to the nation on the disease.

Across Scotland, a total of 321,754 tests have been carried out with 18,445 delivering a positive result for the coronavirus.

Scotland's COVID-19 death toll remains at 2,491 although figures reported by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) on Wednesday reported 4,187 deaths linked to the illness have been registered up to Sunday, July 12.

The number of positive coronavirus cases recorded in NHS Ayrshire & Arran is up three from Saturday to 1,266.

There are fewer than five patients, within the health board's region, in intensive care with confirmed or suspected COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the number of people in hospital with confirmed coronavirus at midnight also stands at fewer than five.

The rolling seven-day average number of daily positive tests recorded has increased to 12.

Symptoms of coronavirus...

The symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a cough
  • a high temperature
  • shortness of breath
  • a loss of taste and smell

But these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness.

The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

How to avoid catching or spreading coronavirus...

  • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  • always wash your hands when you get home or into work

  • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

  • put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards

  • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell

  • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

If you think you may have the coronavirus, do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111 if you need to speak to someone.
