Coronavirus Scotland: Glasgow SEC will be turned into emergency NHS hospital for coronavirus victims

Glasgow's SEC will be transformed into an emergency NHS hospital to treat coronavirus victims.

The First Minister Nicola Sturgeon made the announcement during her speech this afternoon.

The building will house 300 beds within a fortnight and will hold more than 1000 beds at full capacity.

The site will be used as a makeshift hospital (PA)

It will be a fully run NHS facility.

The site, which normally hosts exhibitions, shows, conferences and gigs, was closed to the public earlier this month because of the outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 strain.

The Glasgow complex was identified as the best site for a temporary hospital due to it's central location, transportation links and size.

The announcement comes after 179 new cases of coronavirus have been identified, taking the total to 1563.

A further six more deaths were also confirmed taking the death toll to 47 in Scotland.

The Scottish Government are working in conjunction with the Army to set up the site.

Last week we told how the Army had visited the building for 'detailed discussions' about establishing the site as a temporary medical facility.
