Coronavirus Scotland: Five new deaths as further easing of lockdown restrictions expected

Five new deaths from coronavirus have been reported as Scotland gets set to enter phase two of the route map out of lockdown.

Latest figures from the Scottish Government show 2,453 people have now succumbed to the disease.

Giving her daily briefing, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she expected to confirm a further easing of restrictions on Thursday  - although she warned that not all measures would be implemented overnight.

It is expected that some personal restrictions will be lifted and non-essential shops and outdoor bars and restaurants reintroduced.

Across Scotland, a total of 213,527 tests have been carried out with 18,045 delivering a positive result for COVID-19.

In Ayrshire hospitals, five people are battling confirmed coronavirus.

Fewer than five patients are in intensive care with confirmed or suspected coronavirus.

The data relating to the number of tests carried out has been changed and will now include those performed by both NHS Scotland and the UK Government regional testing centres.

As a result, there is no breakdown by health board of the number of positive cases but officials hope this updated information will be published on or before Thursday.

Symptoms of coronavirus...

The symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a cough
  • a high temperature
  • shortness of breath
  • a loss of taste and smell

But these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness.

The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

How to avoid catching or spreading coronavirus...

  • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  • always wash your hands when you get home or into work

  • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

  • put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards

  • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell

  • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

If you think you may have the coronavirus, do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111 if you need to speak to someone.
