Coronavirus Scotland: Five more people die from virus as hospital death toll hits 1,862

1,862 people have now died in Scottish hospitals after testing positive for coronavirus – a rise of five.

A further 141 people have now tested positive for Covid-19 which takes the number of confirmed cases in the country to 13,627.

The number of confirmed or suspected cases in hospital now stands at 1,453, a decrease of 31.

The figures were revealed during the Scottish Government’s daily press briefing at St Andrew’s house.

It has been revealed that the number of patients in ICU has again decreased and now stands at 80 – a fall from two on Sunday’s figures.

The news comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the nation last night.

The Stay At Home message has been replaced with Stay Alert in England.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has emphasised that this message does not apply in Scotland.

Writing in today’s Daily Record, Sturgeon said: “I am reiterating, in the strongest possible way, that the message to people here in Scotland remains Stay at Home – unless you have to go out for food, medicine, exercise or to do essential work that can’t be done at home.

“The public have responded magnificently to that appeal over recent weeks but it is too soon to change that message.”

She added: “The new slogan introduced by the Prime Minister for the people of England, to “stay alert”, is, I am afraid to say, vague and imprecise, and dilutes the clear call for people to remain at home.”
