Coronavirus Scotland: Edinburgh's four biggest covid-19 hotspots revealed

New information released by the Scottish Government has revealed the areas in Edinburgh which have the highest rates of coronavirus.

Previously Public Health Scotland didn't reveal the exact number of cases per 100,000 people in some of Scotland's hardest hit areas, instead rounding it down to 400+ per 100,000 people for areas considered hotspots.

But an FOI by a BBC Scotland data Journalist has revealed that four areas in Edinburgh have a rate of over 600 cases per every 100,000 people, which is a way higher case rate than most areas in the capital.

The hardest hit area in Edinburgh has been revealed as Niddrie, which has a rate of 652 cases per 100,000 people, making it Edinburgh's top coronavirus hotspot.

The other worst-hit areas in Edinburgh have been revealed as Ratho, Ingilston and Gogar which has a rate of 620 cases per 100,000 people, Leith which has a rate of 612 cases per 100,000 people and Liberton West who have 603 cases per 100,000 people.

According to the data, an area in Dumfries and Galloway has the highest case rate in Scotland, with 4,456 positive cases per 100,000 people in Stranraer South.

This is ten times the 400+ per 100,000 maximum, previously reported by the Public Health Scotland website.
