Coronavirus Scotland: Edinburgh neighbourhood is the 'hardest hit' by Covid deaths in Scotland

An Edinburgh neighbourhood has been identified as the "hardest hit" by Covid-19 deaths across the whole of Scotland.

As reported by The Times, Liberton West and Braid Hills lost 36 residents to the virus last year – a rate of one in every 100. The suburb has a population of around 3600.

The area, in the south of the city, is home to Braid Hills care home, which has a large elderly population. Edinburgh Live reported earlier this month how the Covid-hit home had been issued with an improvement notice by the care inspectorate after concerns were raised about PPE use and cleanliness.

Olma Warnock, the daughter of a man who died after contracting the virus at the home, said she would have moved "heaven and earth" to get him out of the BUPA-run facility if she'd known about the problems.

It was reported earlier this month that 52 residents had tested positive for the virus in addition to 32 staff members, however those at Braid Hills say they have now overcome the issues outlined.

Sandra Hustwick, the care home’s regional director, said: “The regulator has since re-inspected our home and confirmed that their concerns have been addressed, and that significant improvements have been made. The rise in cases across the country has put significant pressure on the care sector. We’ve worked hard to overcome this whilst driving lasting changes.”

The latest Scottish Government figures reveal that there have been seven new coronavirus cases reported in the Liberton West and Braid Hill area for the period between 11 and 17 January. The seven day rate per 100,000 of population is 192.

According to the list of hardest hit areas published by The Times, Woodside in Glenrothes, Fife, was fifth 20 deaths recorded. This is seven per 1000 people.

Burnbank South and Chantinghall in South Lanarkshire, Drumchapel South in Glasgow City and Irvine Fullarton in North Ayrshire have also been badly hit by Covid-19 deaths.
