Coronavirus Scotland: Edinburgh crammed with shoppers while Glasgow resembles ghost town

Pictures have emerged of Edinburgh packed with Christmas shoppers, while just 42 miles away, Scotland's biggest city Glasgow resembles a ghost town.

Usually both cities would be full of shoppers at this time of year, but with Glasgow plunged into tier four lockdown, shutting down all non-essential shops, the west coast city looked utterly deserted.

Meanwhile in Edinburgh, and popular shopping spot Princes Street was packed for miles as the capital enjoyed remaining in tier three of current Covid restrictions.

West Lothian was also placed into harsh tier four lockdown forcing everything but essential shops, such as pharmacies, to close down from Friday at 6pm.

Locals living in Livingston were pictured picking up some last minute Christmas presents in a desperate pre-level four shopping dash.

Meanwhile East Lothian and Midlothian have moved into tier two levels of restrictions, allowing them to enjoy extended hospitality hours and even an alcoholic drink with a meal.

A travel ban has also been put in place in Scotland making it illegal for Scots to travel between local authority tiers without an essential reason, but that didn't stop two crafty locals meeting up for a brew between the East Lothian and City of Edinburgh border.
