Coronavirus Scotland: COVID-19 death toll numbers updated for Ayrshire regions

A total of 192 Ayrshire and Arran residents have died as a result of contracting coronavirus.

The figures released today by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) takes into account COVID-19 deaths up to Sunday, May 3.

The news means that 35 patients in the region have died in a week.

Today's figures also revealed 86 Ayrshire and Arran care home residents have died as a result of contracting coronavirus - a rise of 24 since last week.

As of Sunday there have been a total of 2,795 deaths registered in Scotland where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate - 1,195 of those died in Scottish care homes.

The new figures mean Ayrshire has the fifth-highest death toll in the country.

In South Ayrshire 75 people have died after contracting the virus, while in East Ayrshire that number is 49.  In North Ayrshire 68 have died.

Last week more of the 523 Scottish deaths occurred in care homes (59 per cent) compared with hospitals (37 per cent).

In South Ayrshire's care homes 38 have died from the virus, while in East Ayrshire that number is 19. In North Ayrshire 29 have died. That represents a weekly rise of seven, six and nine respectively.
