Coronavirus Scotland: COVID-19 death toll numbers released for Ayrshire regions

A total of 159 Ayrshire and Arran residents have died as a result of contracting coronavirus.

The figures released today by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) take into account COVID-19 deaths up to Sunday, April 26.

The news means that 39 patients in the region have died in a week.

In East Ayrshire, 41 have died as a result of contracting COVID-19. In North Ayrshire, 55 have died and in South Ayrshire, 63 have passed away.

In South Ayrshire, more people have died in care homes (49 per cent) compared to hospitals (43 per cent).

In East Ayrshire, hospital deaths accounted for 56 per cent of COVID-19 fatalities, while 32 per cent of deaths occurred in care homes.

In North Ayrshire, 55 per cent of deaths took place in hospital and 33 per cent took place in care homes.

The new figures also mean Ayrshire still has the fourth-highest death toll in the country.

Greater Glasgow and Clyde tops the figures with 741 deaths, while Lothian is second (370) and Lanarkshire third (311).

Most deaths occur in hospitals (52 per cent) while almost 40 per cent of deaths happen in care homes (39 per cent).

Over one in 10 deaths occur at home or non-institutional settings (9 per cent).

Figures released by the Scottish Government yesterday showed that there are 738 confirmed coronavirus cases in Ayrshire.

The Kilmarnock Standard told you earlier this week that 252 NHS Ayrshire & Arran staff have tested positive for COVID-19.

A total of 909 tests have been carried out on the vital key workers since Sunday, March 22.
