Coronavirus Scotland cases today: 1401 overnight as new tier lockdown announced

A total of 1,401 new coronavirus cases have been reported in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

The 1,401 new cases represent a 20.6 per cent of individuals who were tested for the virus on Thursday (October 22).

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed the latest figures at the coronavirus daily briefing this afternoon, where she also laid out plans for the new tier alert framework to come into force in a couple of weeks time.

The five tier system will begin on November 2, with each area in Scotland to be given their own alert level rating. The rules and restrictions in that area will then depend on their alert level.

Out of the new cases reported today, 169 are in the Lothians, with a further 493 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 415 in Lanarkshire and 117 in Ayrshire and Arran.

The other cases are split amongst the other nine health boards, taking the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 54,016.

Hospital admissions have also seen a further increase, with 975 patients now being treated for the virus, an increase of 41 from yesterday.

76 patients are also in intensive care units, an increase of two since Thursday.

Sadly, the First Minister also reported 18 further deaths, taking the number of deaths since the start of the pandemic to 2688.
