Coronavirus Scotland cases today: 1,739 reported overnight as 28 new deaths confirmed

A further 1739 coronavirus cases have been recorded in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

Wednesday's figures show a large increase from yesterday, when 1456 cases of Covid-19 were reported across the country.

The new number represents a total of 19.8 per cent of individuals tested for the virus on Tuesday.

Nicola Sturgeon confirmed the latest figures at the coronavirus briefing, where she also confirmed that a new level system will be announced on Friday.

Hospitality restrictions will also continue until this date in order to "transition smoothly to the new system".

The First Minister also detailed that 250 of the new cases are in the Lothians, with a further 605 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 520 in Lanarkshire and 105 in Ayrshire and Arran.

All of those health boards are currently under further restrictions which will be continued to the new level system that will be introduced on November 2.

Hospital admissions have also seen another increase, with 873 patients currently being treated for the virus across the country.

There are also a further 73 patients in intensive care units.

Sadly, 28 deaths were also reported, taking Scotland's death toll from the start of the pandemic to 2653

This is the highest number of deaths recorded in a daily figure since May 21.
