Coronavirus Scotland: Ayrshire records highest weekly death toll since last April

Ayrshire has recorded its highest weekly coronavirus death toll since last April.

New National Records of Scotland (NRS) data shows that between January 18 and January 24, a total of 46 deaths were registered in the region where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

That's the highest number since the week beginning April 13 last year when the same measured death toll stood at 51.

The grim news comes as a further 15 deaths from confirmed coronavirus were recorded in Ayrshire in the last 24 hours.

A further 110 cases of the disease have been diagnosed in the region.

The number of patients with the virus in NHS Ayrshire hospitals has risen by one to 229.

There remains 17 people in intensive care.

Across Scotland, 92 deaths and 1,330 cases have been recorded in the last 24 hours.

There are 2,016 people in hospitals nationwide and 145 patients in intensive care.

Since the start of the pandemic, 5,888 people in Scotland have died who have tested positive for COVID-19.

However, 7,902 deaths have been registered in Scotland where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, up to January 24.
