Coronavirus Scotland: Ayrshire one of only two regions to record rise in weekly deaths

Ayrshire is one of only two Scottish regions to record a rise in the number of weekly Covid-related deaths, according to new official data.

Figures released by the National Records of Scotland show show that between February 8 and February 14, a total of 35 deaths were registered in Ayrshire and Arran where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

That's an increase of eight on the previous week.

Forth Valley is the other Scottish health board region to record a rise, with the number of weekly deaths attributed to coronavirus jumping from 21 to 33.

Ayrshire's weekly rate is the third-highest in Scotland behind Glasgow (80) and Lanarkshire (65).

Broken down by local authority, deaths increased from nine to 18 in North Ayrshire and from 14 to 15 in East Ayrshire.

South Ayrshire recorded a fall in weekly deaths from four to two.

A further 12 Covid deaths have been reported in Ayrshire in the last 24 hours – among 64 nationwide, according to Public Health Scotland data.

A total of 113 people have also tested positive for the disease, taking the pandemic total to 14,812.

There are currently 144 people in Ayrshire hospitals which is up one on the previous day.

The number of patients in intensive care has risen by three to 12.

Nationally, 1,121 new cases of coronavirus have been reported.

There are 1,317 people battling the virus in Scottish hospitals; 99 in intensive care.
