Coronavirus Scotland: Ayrshire council to monitor Beach Park usage after visitors ignore social distancing plea

North Ayrshire Council is to close all playparks and monitor visitor numbers to Irvine beach park in their efforts to stem the spread of coronavirus.

The council has made their move after ‘becoming concerned’ about the large number of people who have been gathering in parks, seafronts and other locations in North Ayrshire.

This is despite well-publicised guidance calling for social distancing in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

On Monday North Ayrshire Council agreed to:

Close all playparks to prevent parents and children touching the same play equipment, as part of the effort to reduce the possibility of transmission of coronavirus.

Close Largs seafront car park to discourage the large numbers of people who have disregarded advice to stay indoors and have gathered in the promenade area in large numbers.

Close all public toilets which remain under council ownership.

Monitor usage of Eglinton Country Park and Irvine Beach Park with the decision on access remaining subject to review.

A spokesman said: “While we would encourage people to continue to exercise and go outside, this should be done in a safe manner which restricts the possibility of close contact with others.”
