Coronavirus Scotland: 928 new cases as nation homes in on vaccine milestone

A further 928 new cases of coronavirus have been reported in Scotland as the nation homes in on a key vaccination milestone.

New figures released by the Scottish Goverment show 886,823 people in the country have now had their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon this afternoon stated in her daily briefing that over the course of this week, she expects to hit the milestone of one million vaccines.

The boost is, however, tempered by news of a further five deaths from the virus – all in the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board region.

There are currently 1,672 people battling the virus in Scottish hospitals; 108 in intensive care.

In Ayrshire, a further 83 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

There are 200 patients in the region's hospitals, down two from yesterday, and 11 people in intensive care which is an increase of one on yesterday.

Scotland's death toll from coronavirus now stands at 6,443.

However, 8,347 deaths have been registered in Scotland where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate up to January 31.
