Coronavirus Scotland: 908 new cases recorded as parents wait on schools decision

A further 908 people have been diagnosed with the coronavirus in Scotland while the nation's death roll has also risen.

Figures have been produced by the Scottish Government this afternoon as part of its national COVID-19 daily briefing.

And the data comes as parents across Scotland wait anxiously on news regarding the reopening of schools to pupils for some age groups on Monday, February 22.

The Scottish Government will make a final decision on whether kids from primaries 1-3 and senior secondary school students can return.

Concerns have been raised, however, after Professor Jason Leitch said progress in suppressing the virus had "stalled" at a briefing yesterday.

He added: "Over this weekend, I and my colleagues, with the modellers, with the statisticians, with the public health leaders, will give advice to the First Minister, the cabinet secretary and the cabinet and they will decide on Monday whether schools should open, even in this limited way."

Across Scotland, as of 8.30am this morning, a total of 1,173,445 people had received the first dose of their Covid vaccine with 14,009 having received their second dose.

Tragically, however, a further 45 patients, including six people from the NHS Ayrshire & Arran health board region, have died after contracting Covid which means 6,711 people have passed away since March.

However, data from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) shows 8,726 deaths had been registered up to Sunday, February 7 where the disease was mentioned on the death certificate. Across the UK, the figure was 116,287 as of last night.

The number of positive coronavirus cases recorded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran has risen by 104 to 14,496.

There are 10 people, within the health board's region, in intensive care with confirmed COVID-19 which is down two from yesterday.

In addition, the number of people in hospital with confirmed coronavirus at midnight was 158 which is a reduction of four from yesterday.

In terms of the rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, North Ayrshire stood at 131.4 as of Friday, February 12. In East Ayrshire, it was 252.4 while it was 95.9 in South Ayrshire.

East Ayrshire's figure is the highest seven-day infection rate in Scotland.

A total of 190,913 positive tests have been recorded since the end of February from 1.621 million tests carried out.
