Coronavirus Scotland: 89 deaths overnight as lockdown continues

A total of 1,636 new coronavirus cases have been reported in Scotland in the last 24 hours.

John Swinney reported the latest figures at the coronavirus daily briefing this afternoon, standing in for Nicola Sturgeon.

This week, the Deputy First Minister was also part of the decision to extend the lockdown restrictions, with schools not to return until at least mid February.

The new cases reported today represent a total of seven per cent of those tested for the virus on Tuesday

This takes the total number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 168,299.

Out of the latest cases, 182 are in the NHS Lothian health board, with a further 510 in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

328 cases were also reported in Lanarkshire.

Hospital figures have again showed another rise, with 2,004 people currently being treated for Covid-19, a rise of one since Wednesday.

161 people are in intensive care, a rise of five since yesterday.

Sadly, the Deputy First Minister also reported 89 further deaths have been registered in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of deaths to 5,468.
