Coronavirus Scotland: 41 new deaths recorded in past 24 hours as cases rise by 572

41 new deaths of people who tested positive for coronavirus have been confirmed in the last 24 hours, bringing Scotland's death toll under this measurement to 4,280.

572 new cases were also confirmed by the Scottish Government - 4.1% of all tests carried out - and bringing the number of positive tests to 110,612.

1,033 people are currently in hospital, with 53 in intensive care.

The new figures come after Nicola Sturgeon announced "preventative action" may be needed to combat the spread of a new strain of Covid-19.

The First Minister confirmed she attended a four nations meeting regarding the new variant of the virus, which is rapidly spreading across the UK.

Writing on Twitter, Ms Sturgeon said: "Following a 4 nations Covid call earlier, I'll chair @scotgov Cabinet meeting this afternoon to discuss emerging evidence on new variant.

"Cases currently at lower level in Scotland than rUK - but preventative action may be necessary to stop faster spreading strain taking hold."

England's chief medical officer Chris Whitty said the UK had now informed the World Health Organisation that it had concluded the mutant strain could spread more quickly.
