Covid Scotland: 400 pupils self-isolating at Fife school after huge coronavirus outbreak

A school in Fife has now reported that over 400 of their pupils are self-isolating due to a coronavirus outbreak.

Auchmuty High School in Glenrothes has now seen ten pupils and six staff members test positive for Covid-19, as Fife remains in tier three of the alert levels.

On Tuesday, headteacher Alan Pithie confirmed that the school is going through an "incredibly difficult situation".

He said: “At the moment the basic figures are that we have ten pupils who have tested positive and six staff members.

“The outcome of that is that 13 staff in total are either positive or having to self-isolate and over 400 pupils are also self-isolating at the present time.

“I would say that currently the school attendance is around 50% at the present time.

“This sounds an incredible horrendous picture and it is, this is an incredibly difficult situation to be going through.

However, Mr Pithie also said that the emerging facts make it "a slightly better picture" as the number of new positive cases seems to have stopped.

A staff member at Auchmuty High School told Edinburgh Live that they believe the system is working.

“It’s not what anyone wants but the school has taken the right decisions quickly to look after everyone.

"I think everyone is working together to make sure young people get the support they need whether they are isolating at home or attending [classes]," they said.

It comes as the teaching union EIS is consulting members on whether they would be willing to strike over the continued requirement for in person teaching.
