Coronavirus Scotland: 383 new cases as First Minister gets set to address nation

Scotland has recorded 386 new cases of coronavirus and one new death from the deadly disease in the last 24 hours.

The figures were released by the Scottish Government this afternoon just minutes before First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was set to make an announcement in the Scottish Parliament on new restrictions.

She will also speak to the nation in a televised address at around 8.05pm

The new cases figure represent 7.6 per cent of newly tested individuals. The total number of cases now stands at 25,009.

Seven new cases have been reported in Ayrshire and Arran bringing the pandemic total for the region to 1,542.

At the moment, 73 people are in Scottish hospitals with coronavirus and 10 people are in intensive care.

Symptoms of coronavirus...

The symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a cough
  • a high temperature
  • shortness of breath
  • a loss of taste and smell

But these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness.

The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

How to avoid catching or spreading coronavirus...

  • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  • always wash your hands when you get home or into work

  • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

  • put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards

  • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell

  • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

If you think you may have the coronavirus, do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111 if you need to speak to someone.
