Coronavirus Scotland: 245 new cases as nation braced for greater restrictions

A further 245 cases of coronavirus have been in reported in Scotland as the nation braces itself for further lockdown restrictions.

The figures were released by the Scottish Government this afternoon just hours after Health Secretary Jeane Freeman told the BBC new measures to curtail the disease will be announced 'very shortly'.

No new deaths were reported but there are currently 63 patients in hospital with nine in intensive care.

In Ayrshire, one new case of coronavirus was reported bringing the total for the pandemic to 1,528.

The total number of confirmed cases in Scotland now stands at 24,371. Deaths from a positive case remains at 2,505.

Symptoms of coronavirus...

The symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a cough
  • a high temperature
  • shortness of breath
  • a loss of taste and smell

But these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness.

The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

How to avoid catching or spreading coronavirus...

  • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  • always wash your hands when you get home or into work

  • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

  • put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards

  • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell

  • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

If you think you may have the coronavirus, do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111 if you need to speak to someone.
