Coronavirus Scotland: 22 dead from coronavirus in Scotland and 51 in intensive care

The number of people who have died in Scotland from coronavirus has reached  22.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon updated the country in a statement today and also said the total of coronavirus patients in intensive care is 51.

Yesterday, Health Secretary Jeane Freeman told MSPs that more than 2,500 people likely to be carrying the Covid-19 virus in Scotland.

Ms Freeman was giving evidence before the Scottish Parliament's Health Committee on the impact of the Coronavirus Bill.

MSPs are debating a legislative consent motion, which will provide support from the Scottish Parliament to the Coronavirus Bill, currently working its way through Westminster.

It includes provisions allowing retired medical professionals to return to help fight the epidemic as well as a range of emergency powers to encourage social distancing.

Scotland is still on lockdown and Scots are being reminded to follow the new regulations.

We are advised not to leave our homes unless to shop for essentials, to take exercise once a day, for medical reasons, to care for a vulnerable person or to travel to essential work if that cannot be done at home.

The Lockdown was announced by Boris Johnson and Nicola Sturgeon on Monday.

Sturgeon said: "These measures are essential for the protection of others.

"Coronovirus this is the biggest challenge of our lifetime and  measures we take to tackle it must reflect the magnitude of that.

"These measures are essential to slow down the spread of this virus. They are essential to reduce the peak impact of it.
