Coronavirus Scotland: 16 dead from coronavirus in Scotland as confirmed cases rise to 584

The number of people who have died in Scotland from coronavirus has reached 16.

The total number of positive cases rises to 584 - an increase of 85 overnight.

The death toll has risen by two since Monday.

Earlier today, health secretary Jeane Freeman said 25 people are in intensive care in Scotland.

It comes after Nicola Sturgeon ordered a country-wide lockdown in Scotland from Monday tonight in an attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The First Minister spoke after the Prime Minister Boris Johnson addressed the nation live on television from Downing Street.

Reacting to the statement from Johnson, she said: “They are unprecedented, they amount effectively to what has been described as a lockdown.

"But these measures are essential for the protection of others. Coronovirus this is the biggest challenge of our lifetime and  measures we take to tackle it must reflect the magnitude of that.

"These measures are essential to slow down the spread of this virus. They are essential to reduce the peak impact of it.

"So what I’m telling people across Scotland that the now must do to help fight this virus is stay at home.

"If we do all of these things, all of us do all of these things, if we all agree, however difficult to restrict our own lives for a period, then many fewer of us will die of this virus than would otherwise be the case.

She said: "Let me be clear. I really hope and expect that the issue of enforcement will never be more than an academic one. I hope and expect that everyone will understand that complying with the rules  is in the interest of all of us.

"They are essential to prevent our National Health Service being overwhelmed, so that it can continue to provide treatment to all those who need it. And they are essential  quite bluntly, to save lives.

"So I asked you not to think that any of this is being done lightly. It is absolutely not. This is for the protection of each one of us.

"I want people to think of this not as guidance or advice but as a set of rules to be followed for the protection of yourself, your loved one, your community."

She added: "I fully expect the vast majority of people to do the right thing."
