Coronavirus Scotland: 1,049 new cases confirmed amid nasty death toll spike

A further 1,049 cases of the coronavirus have been diagnosed in Scotland as the nation's tragic death toll continues to creep grimly towards 6,000.

The Scottish Government has released data this afternoon as part of its national COVID-19 daily briefing.

A further 87 patients, including nine people from the NHS Ayrshire & Arran health board region, have died after contracting Covid which means 5,796 people have tragically passed away since March.

However, data from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) shows 7,448 deaths had been registered up to Sunday, January 17 where the disease was mentioned on the death certificate. Across the UK, the figure was 98,531 as of last night.

The number of positive coronavirus cases recorded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran risen by 89 to 12,984.

There are 17 people, within the health board's region, in intensive care with confirmed COVID-19 which is up two from yesterday.

In addition, the number of people in hospital with confirmed coronavirus at midnight was 228 which is a reduction of 12 from yesterday.

In terms of the rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, North Ayrshire stood at 222.7 as of Monday, January 25. In East Ayrshire, it was 237.7 while it was 172.3 in South Ayrshire.

Across Scotland as of 8.30am this morning, a total of 437,900 people had received the first dose of their Covid vaccine with 6,060 having received their second dose.

A total of 174,002 positive tests have been recorded since the end of February from 1.540 million tests carried out.
