Coronavirus: Schools tech departments make vital masks to help protect health workers

Staff at East Renfrewshire's high schools have been doing their bit for frontline health workers and those caring in the community during the coronavirus pandemic.

The design and technology teachers at Mearns Castle High School, which is in the catchment for Eaglesham and Waterfoot, have been busy along with colleagues from others schools making protective visors.

Barrhead, Eastwood and St Luke's High have also been involved.

Tina Oman, a design and technology teacher at Barrhead High, said: “School staff were approached by the council as there had been some national issues with ensuring frontline health staff had the correct protective equipment to wear whilst carrying out their duties.

"Thanks to the financial support of our Parent Council, we had been able to purchase a laser cutter for the school some months ago. That meant we now have the capability to design and create these types of items – so I was only too happy to help out.

"These are certainly challenging times for all, but if I can help out – along with lots of other colleagues at schools across the area – by making some masks then I was delighted to do my bit. We all have to work together during these difficult times.”

And a similar project has been carried out with Calderglen High School in East Kilbride posting on social media about their efforts to make the protective masks for healthcare facilities, care homes and businesses.

It is just a few examples of the community coming together and helping those in need with NHS staff in particular overwhelmed at some of the acts of generosity shown at this difficult time.

Brian Murray – director of Murray and Son Luxury Coach Hire – decided to put his empty buses to good use and is getting behind the wheel to run the free shuttle from around Lanarkshire and Glasgow to make sure staff can get in to their work.

And local takeaways and food outlets have also been donating meals to staff at Hairmyres Hospital as well as dropping off goodies and supplies for patients.
