Coronavirus scare in Edinburgh as diners at restaurant screened for deadly virus

Diners visiting an Edinburgh restaurant are being screened for coronavirus.

Ong Gie - a popular Korean eatery in the city centre - implemented the policy as Scotland’s infection rate continues to rise.

A sign in the window of the Brougham Place restaurant said: "Due to outbreak of new coronavirus in Scotland our restaurant measures customers body temperature with contactless thermometer.

"Hope you understand and co-operate with us to protect the public health.

A notice on the Ong Gie Korean Restaurant in Edinburgh (UGC)

"We appreciate your co-operation and apologise for any inconvenience."

One visitor said: “They were really busy so I guess people either didn’t mind or felt reassured.

"It seems a bit nuts considering anyone carrying the virus might not have a temp at that particular time but I suppose they feel as if they’re doing a public service.

"It will no doubt catch on."

The total number of people testing positive in Scotland currently stands at 16 but this figure is expected to rise rapidly over the coming days.

No-one at Ong Gie was available for comment.
