Coronavirus scare at Perth's Kwinana port as crew member on ship shows symptoms

The crew member on board the BM Matsuyama is due to be taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital.

A crew member on board a ship berthed at Kwinana port in Perth's south has reported some coronavirus-like symptoms.

The bulk carrier BM Matsuyama is currently berthed at the Kwinana Grain Terminal and is due to leave on Tuesday night.

The Department of Health plans to transport the crew member from the BM Matsuyama to Fiona Stanley Hospital to undergo a medical assessment.

The department said it was not currently a confirmed case of COVID-19.

"However, members of the public should be reassured that as a precaution, this person will be transported, assessed and treated using COVID precautions," the department said in a statement.

"A GeneXpert test will be ordered for a quick result which will come back tomorrow morning."

There are 19 crew members on board the ship after they boarded the vessel on August 20 in Manila in the Philippines.

Before coming to WA, the ship was in Singapore on November 25.

The Department of Health said a Commonwealth Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment officer boarded the vessel today wearing PPE, and was met by crew members who were all wearing PPE.

The department said it was following a vessel outbreak response plan which has previously been activated successfully.

WA reported no new cases of coronavirus today, with the state's total number of confirmed cases remaining at 830.
