Coronavirus rulebreakers could now face fines of £200 for flouting face covering and gathering rules

Anyone caught breaking rules to stop the spread of coronavirus could now be fined £200.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson today announced a string of new restrictions as the number of cases in the UK continues to rise.

And those who flout the rules will now pay the price as fines for not wearing face coverings where required, or breaking the so-called 'rule of six' have now been increased to £200.

Mr Johnson announced the new restrictions today and will address the nation tonight to outline the measures to the public.

The new rules include an increase in the number of places that face coverings must be worn, including taxis.

Face coverings must now also be worn by retail staff while at work and by customers in indoor hospitality venues - except while seated at a table to eat or drink.

The fine for not complying with face covering rules was previously £100.

The £200 fine could also be slapped on those who break the so-called 'rule of six' which dictates that no more than six people should gather socially.

And the Prime Minister today reduced the number of exemptions to the 'rule of six' by banning indoor team sport - such as indoor five-a-side football matches.

Explaining why action is needed now, Mr Johnson said: "We always knew that, while we might have driven the virus into retreat, the prospect of a second wave was real. I'm sorry to say that, we have reached a perilous turning point."

The Prime Minister warned that the current restrictions, including those he has just announced, would probably have to continue for six months.

He also urged anyone who could work from home to do so once again from tomorrow.
