Coronavirus: Restrictions in Ireland 'likely' to return in January due to rising Covid-19 cases in

Restrictions are “likely” to return in January due to rising Covid-19 cases, a leading expert has said.

Infectious disease specialist Sam McConkey said that not only has the progress made during the last lockdown levelled off, but rates are increasing in 23 out of 26 counties, showing that the “graph has turned”. This comes after Chief Medical Officer Tony Holohan said he was “very concerned” about the coronavirus incidence rising again.

Mr McConkey told RTE’s Today With Claire Byrne yesterday: “The change in behaviours that people had at the beginning of December where now shops are open, retail and restaurants are open, that change in how we’re all living in society is, I believe, now feeding through.

“There is not just a levelling off in the numbers but actually we’re starting to see a rise.

“So the graph has turned and now, unfortunately, the number of Covid-19 cases in Ireland is actually rising in about 23 of the 26 counties.”
