Coronavirus restrictions: Belfast City Council to close Zoo and St George's Market for two weeks

Belfast Zoo and St Georges' Market are among the popular spots to close due to the latest coronavirus restrictions.

As we head into a strict two week lockdown, Belfast City Council has detailed its services which will be affected by the circuit breaker from November 27 to December 11.

Hospitality, close contact services and non-essential shops will all close their doors on Friday as the Executive hopes to curb the spread of covid-19 ahead of Christmas.

Belfast City Council said some of its venues and facilities are closed, or will close, in line with the latest NI Executive restrictions.

The following will be closed over the next two weeks:

  • Belfast Zoo
  • St George's Market
  • Smithfield Market, apart from essential service traders
  • Sports pitches, pavilions and MUGA - pitches and pavilions are closed, but Multi Use Games Areas will close from Friday for two weeks
  • Community centres - but those providing permissible essential services will remain open
  • Leisure centres and gyms
  • Golf courses
  • Malone House
  • Belfast Castle
  • Tropical Ravine
  • Palm House
  • ICC Belfast (Waterfront)
  • Ulster Hall
  • Cecil Ward Building including Consumer Advice Services, Belfast Planning Service, and Bereavement Services Office

Over the next two weeks, there are no public tours or functions in City Hall rooms. City Hall exhibition is closed. City Hall grounds are open.

All council parks remain open at the moment but the public are asked to adhere to social distancing when out. Parks are currently open from 7.30am to 4.30pm.

Council services that will continue operating as normal include:

  • Bin collections
  • Parks & playgrounds
  • Recycling centres
  • Public toilets
  • Business helpline - 028 9027 0565
  • Registration services
  • Environmental health services
