Coronavirus reproduction rate in Nottinghamshire revealed as 'concerns' voiced on transmission

The current reproduction (R) rate of Covid-19 for Nottinghamshire is currently lower than the national average.

Public health bosses confirmed the figure at a weekly briefing on the virus in the county, during which 'grave concerns' were raised over transmission among people over 60.

The R rate is the average number of secondary infections produced by a single infected person.

It is usually linked with the growth rate, which reflects how quickly the number of infections are changing day by day.

In a briefing by city and county directors of Public Health it was confirmed the R-number for Nottinghamshire was currently between 1 and 1.1.

An R-number of 1 means that on average every person who is infected will infect 1 other person, meaning the total number of infections is stable.

If R is 2, on average, each infected person infects 2 more people. If R is 0.5 then on average for each 2 infected people, there will be only 1 new infection.

If the R is greater than 1 the epidemic is growing, if R is less than 1 the epidemic is shrinking. The higher R is above 1, the more people 1 infected person infects and so the faster the epidemic grows.

Currently, Nottinghamshire's R-number is lower than the national average of 1.1 to 1.3.

An R-number between 1.1 and 1.3 means that on average every 10 people infected will infect between 11 and 13 other people.
