Coronavirus: record rise across parts of Bristol region

Two areas across the Bristol region have recorded their highest daily coronavirus case totals since the pandemic first hit.

Both Bath and North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire confirmed record rises today, with 130 and 232 respectively.

The figures come on the same day that Boris Johnson announced a third national lockdown.

Non-essential retail, hospitality and personal care services must shut until at least the middle of next month as Covid-19 again spirals out of control.

Data shows infections rose by 41 per cent across the UK between Christmas Day and January 3.

Two Covid variants are spreading across the nation, including one that started in Kent and another from South Africa.

Bristol also recorded a steep jump in cases today, with a further 289 people diagnosed with the virus over the past 24 hours.

Our city's total number of Covid patients in hospital has soared from 144 recorded on December 27 to 252 on December 30 - the latest available date.

And 15 coronavirus patients are currently being cared for on ventilators.

The breakdown of new cases

The daily rise in cases for each part of the region is recorded below, with the total figure during the pandemic in brackets:

  • Bath and North East Somerset: +130 (5,139)

  • Bristol: +289 (19,872)

  • North Somerset: +140 (6,254)

  • South Gloucestershire: +232 (9,219)

UK cases

The UK coronavirus death toll is up by 454 and a further 58,784 cases have been recorded, with infections passing the 50,000 mark for the seventh day in a row.
