Coronavirus R-rate for Nottinghamshire revealed as shops, pubs and cafes open for first time in months

Nottinghamshire's latest R-rate has been revealed as non-essential retail, pubs, cafes and more reopen for the first time in many months.

From Monday, April 12, many businesses are opening their doors to the public for the first time since last year.

This includes hairdressers, pubs with an outdoor setting, gyms and non-essential retail.

In Nottingham people have been queuing for shops such as Primark, Zara and Footlocker, while others have been eagerly waiting for a much-needed trim with their hairstylist.

Nottinghamshire Police has however urged residents to not "ruin the progress" made during the national lockdown which was imposed back in January.

Sticking to the rules is particularly important to keep the reproduction rate of the virus low.

The reproduction rate (R) is the average number of secondary infections produced by a single infected person.

In England, the Government says the rate of reproduction sits at around 0.8 to 1.0, with a growth rate range of between -4% and 0%.

An R-rate between 0.8 and 1.0 means that, on average, every 10 people infected will infect between 8 and 10 other people.

The estimates represent the transmission of the virus over the past few weeks due to the time delay between someone being infected, developing symptoms, and needing healthcare.

Across both the city and the county the local R-rate is just below that of England, according to Nottinghamshire County Council.

The rate currently sits at an estimated 0.7 to 1.0.

Any number above 1.0 means the virus is more readily spreading and reproducing.
