Coronavirus R rate for Nottinghamshire revealed as lockdown eases

Public health officials have revealed the current coronavirus R rate for Nottinghamshire.

Cases and infection rates continued to drop across the county in the week that phase 2 of the government's roadmap out of lockdown was launched.

The R rate was estimated to be between 0.7 and 1 in Nottinghamshire, according to the most recent figures.

R stands for virus reproduction value and it represents how well an area is dealing with the virus and how quickly it is being spread around.

If the R-value is at 1, it means that each person with Covid-19 is infecting one other person, on average.

Jonathan Gribbin, director of public health at Nottinghamshire County Council, told Nottinghamshire Live this rate is consistent with the drop-off in cases seen in recent weeks.

He said: "At the moment, we're modelling R on a fortnightly basis.

"So our most recent workaround that was done last week, and at that point, R for Nottinghamshire was estimated to be between 0.7 and 1.

"I think that's consistent with the picture we've got right across the county of rates which are, in general, falling.

"So that's encouraging."

Mr Gribbin also confirmed that the United Kingdom Health Security Agency, formerly Public Health England, have not notified authorities in Nottinghamshire of any new variants entering the county.

The body is continuing to monitor the situation in London, where a case of the Indian Covid variant has been detected, and Nottinghamshire County Council is ready to act if needed.
