Coronavirus quarantine - your rights to compensation if you get stuck abroad

Coronavirus outbreaks have seen a series of quarantines taking place in a bid to contain the virus - and it's led to some holidaymakers ending up forced to stay abroad longer than planned.

For example, hundreds of guests including Brits were quarantined in a Tenerife hotel after an Italian doctor and his wife staying there tested positive for the virus.

The hotel was locked down with all guests being quarantined - and it meant some were forced to stay in the Canary Island longer than planned.

But what are your rights if you're on holiday and there's an outbreak, leading to you being quarantined in your hotel?

The silver lining is that you won't necessarily be out of pocket.

In the first instance, get in touch with your hotel or airline (depending on the circumstances of your quarantine), or travel firm, who may be able to provide compensation for the extra days of your stay.

If you can't recover the costs from them, then check your travel insurance policy for cover for 'disruption to travel'.

If this is included in your policy, your insurer may be able to help cover the costs of your extended stay - and in some cases, they may also be able to cover extra expenses you incur during the quarantine.

You may need to prove that you were unable to get the compensation from another source to claim on your insurance.

It's worth noting that this does depend on the type of policy you have, so make sure to check the wording before you set off on holiday.

If you're unsure, get in touch with your insurance provider as they will be able to advise you on what cover you can get should the situation arise.

If there is an outbreak at your destination, make sure to check the latest FCO advice as this often includes tips for Brits already out abroad.
